 دل خود را بر دانستن حکمت و دانستن حماقت و جهالت مشغول ساختم. پس فهمیدم که این نیز در پی باد زحمت کشیدن است. زیرا که در کثرت حکمت، کثرت غم است و هر که عِلم را بیافزاید، حزن را می‌افزاید.

زیرا که وقایع بنی‌آدم مثل وقایع بهایم است؛ برای ایشان یک واقعه است؛ چنانکه این می‌میرد به همان‌طور آن نیز می‌میرد و برای همه یک نَفَس است و انسان بر بهایم برتری ندارد چون‌که همه باطل هستند. همه به یک جا می‌روند و همه از خاک هستند و همه به خاک رجوع می‌نمایند. کیست روح انسان را بداند که به بالا صعود می‌کند یا روح بهایم را که پایین بسوی زمین نزول می‌نماید؟

Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath; humans have no advantage over animals. Everything is meaningless. All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?
